I strive to have an equitable learning environment, before class starts I go over everyone’s name, if it is a difficult name I will have issues enunciating I put little cheat-sheets on my attendees list to help me, if I still have trouble I will go around the room and have everyone introduce themselves and if/when I encounter a difficult name I will have the individual assist me the correct pronunciation (I have everyone introduce to not single one person out). I also try and use good eye contact with everyone I am speaking to, so they know I care about what I am saying and what they are saying, it also gives me the opportunity to read body language to see if they need additional assistance.
Depending on the course material I try and use as much teambuilding exercises for engagement and to learn peoples backgrounds that otherwise may not be shared in a traditional classroom setting.
